My Thing: “I Talk to the Dead”

Maria Cristina Teot runs a spiritual practice in Dietikon. She says she conveys messages from the deceased.

By Desirée Ayer

“I call myself a multidimensional communicator, not a medium,” says Maria Cristina Teot. She feels the title limits her. It is burdened with too many expectations and, in the spiritual world, only describes communication with spirits. “Everything has energy that I can communicate with: the trees, the animals, the water, or even this glass,” says the 58-year-old, pointing to her glass of water.

In her practice at the Chi Center in Dietikon, she offers encounters with the afterlife, helping others discover their spirituality. She views her work as a gift she wants to share to help others. For instance, the bereaved can find comfort through her. Teot says, “Receiving a message from the afterlife reassures family members. They hear that their loved ones are in a good place and watching over them.”

The Afterlife Decides Who Reaches Out

Once or twice a week, Teot—who also works as a career-changer in a residential home—conducts these so-called afterlife encounters. Each session lasts about an hour.

Beforehand, Teot prefers to know as little as possible about her clients. “That way, I can focus better on my senses,” she says. At the beginning of the session, she asks the deceased to contact her. “I describe the person to my client for identification,” she says. “I mention, for example, their approximate age, physical ailments during life, personality traits, or their appearance.”

The Deceased Give Signs

She has no influence over who reaches out—it’s up to the afterlife. “Sometimes, my client cannot identify the person who contacts me,” says Teot. In such cases, she asks them to check with people around them to see if anyone recognizes the individual. “Most of the time, my clients eventually find a connection,” says Teot.

The messages from the deceased are usually well-meaning. Often, the family members receive an apology, advice, or a sign that the deceased is still with them. For most of her clients, one session is enough to help with the grieving process. Teot doesn’t want to see her clients every two weeks. “I’m not a telephone to the afterlife,” she says. Everyone must find their own way of dealing with grief, and she doesn’t offer therapy.

One encounter that particularly stayed with Teot was when a young woman wanted to communicate with her deceased boyfriend. “The boyfriend kept showing me a blue and a white feather,” says Teot. “The girlfriend couldn’t understand what the feathers meant.” Shortly afterward, the woman found both feathers on the street. For Teot, it was a clear sign from the afterlife.

In her 16 years as a part-time multidimensional communicator, Teot has had to stop only two or three sessions. This occurred either because too many people from the afterlife wanted to come through at once or because the client was extremely skeptical. “If someone continuously denies everything I say, I can’t work,” she says. In such cases, the session isn’t charged.

Otherwise, a session costs 150 Swiss francs.

“I’ve Always Been Very Sensitive”

Teot, now 58, has been working as a medium for over thirty years. However, she has always been very sensitive. “Even as a child, I could quickly tell when someone was lying, and I already had my spiritual friends back then,” she says. In 1993, she met an English medium in her hometown of Schwyz. The realization was not surprising for Teot. Shortly thereafter, she began her multi-year training as a medium at the Mandala Center in Schwyz.

Maria Cristina later called herself a multidimensional communicator, believing that the souls of all beings wander into different dimensions after death. “The dimensions reflect our values, experiences, and beliefs. That applies to our loved ones as well,” she explains.

According to Teot, everyone possesses spiritual abilities. “Some people just develop these senses faster,” she says. To foster the mediumistic and sensitive gifts of others, Teot has offered various workshops. In her regular “Heart-to-Heart Encounter” sessions, she connects with people’s energy. “That way, I can see what challenges my clients are going through, where their personal resources lie, and what they should focus on.”

People Are Becoming More Open

Teot believes spirituality will become increasingly important to people in the future. “People are becoming more open-minded in their awareness,” she says. When she compares the reactions to her work today to thirty years ago, she notices greater acceptance. The internet has also made people more open in their beliefs. Science has contributed to this too. Quantum physics, she says, is getting closer to spirituality. “Science is slowly recognizing that there is more than what has been provable so far,” says Teot.
